Irrigation over the winter months? Yes yes and yes! This is the most over looked practice in grape growing that happens winter after winter. Winter irrigation helps with several things that will directly effect the next years crop. During dormancy, if there is not a substantial amount of rainfall, it is a must to give a nice long shot of water every 3 to 4 weeks.

1 - A nice long irrigation will flush salts or other build ups in the soil

2 - Keeping the root system nice and moist helps keep plants insulated in the really cold winter months to protect against winter kill

3 - If vines don’t have an adequate amount of moisture during dormancy, the first thing the vine abandons is the fruitful bud
